Pagans and the Divine

The Pagan viewpoint on divinity is quite distinctive. Pagans tend to believe in a Divine force that is active in everything. The difference between this and other religions is that Pagans tend to accept a duality of the sexes within this entity (See The All by Scott Cunningham)

However this is quite an enormous idea to apply to day-to-day life. Hence many Pagans use gods and goddesses of antiquity to represent different aspects of this oneness. The aspect being represented may be time (as in the maiden, mother and crone) or personality or feeling (as in mars or Aphrodite), or natural aspect (Poseidon, Demeter). Otherwise they are simply called The Lord and Lady.

The difference between the God in The Old and New Testament helps demonstrate the differences in temperament, It is said in many religion’s that Humankind is made in the Divine image, therefore it is reasonable to expect the Divine to have the same character flaws, Greed, Anger, Lust, Compassion, Love, Sympathy etc. And these aspects are most fully expressed within the vengeful God of Noah and the Flood and the compassionate God who sacrifices his only Son to absolve Humankind from their sins.

This belief in the Divine in all has caused the belief by other people of nature worship, when in reality it is not nature that is worshipped, merely that it is easier to communicate with the Divine through nature, untouched by human hand then through a stone used in a building, or an oak desk, although the Divine also resides within these items.

It is therefore accepted that Life is a Divine gift, given for us to cherish, and hence many Pagans have adopted lifestyles that maintain there bodies, many are vegetarians, they work out and keep fit. However this is not to say that Pagans share the belief common in many religions of suicide and abortion. This mostly an individual thing, and it would be incorrect and wrong morally to make a statement when it is such a diverse issue. Many Pagans are pro-choice, some are also pro-life. Many believe Suicide is a sin, others feel that the source of why people feel suicidal should be treated, rather then punishing the deceased and their family. However, most do believe that needless death is wasteful, if you kill a cow for meat, the entire carcass should be used. However we also hold a debt to the earth to ensure that species are not hunted to extinction.

Unfortunately, similar to many other religions, the best and easiest way to understand what Divinity means to a Pagan of your acquaintance is to ask them.
