Belief System
Wicca is a system of values and morals, these include a respect
for life, an acceptance of the facts of life.
Wiccans tend to be realistic, the religion based on experience rather
then theological experience.
As Wiccan belief dictates that the earth is a living being they
try to minimize environmental damage in their daily lives, some
are also very active in the ecological movement, seeing themselves
as a part of the world rather then separate to it.
Wicca is a dualist religion, believing in both a male and female
aspect of divinity, both equal and opposite. This can take many
views, either as many gods and goddesses or as a single god and
goddess.
Wicca takes its divine beings from many religions; some Wiccans
even worship Mary, mother of Jesus, in her own right as she is comparable
to many other goddesses.
However in general Wiccans do not try, or even bother explaining
why they use certain gods and goddesses, being of a pragmatic nature,
after all why question it if it works?
Ethics and Ethical Texts
Wicca ethics are best summoned up in "The Wiccan Rede".
Despite having no written code poems, essays and thoughts by elders
of the Craft have achieved almost a holy status. Among these are
the Threefold Law and the Wiccan Rede.
The Wiccan Rede can be condensed into the one sentence:
"An it harm none, do what ye will"
This sounds very open ended but is actually very restrictive i.e.
casting spells without permission and harm one can mean anything,
i.e. yourself, the planet, the person etc…
The Threefold Law merely maintains that whatever you give out,
be it a blessing, curses etc will be returned to you three times.
This helps maintains a balance in life at all times.
Black Magic
So called "Black Magic" is the casting of spells which
can harm others if you cast a spell on a person without their consent,
even if it is for their benefit is "gray" magic at best.
This is for many reasons, firstly you will be responsible for the
consequences, secondly the person may retaliate, thirdly it corrupts
the soul, the Hindu's call it the Law of Karma.
Contrary to popular belief Wiccans have very strict rules about
sex in the coven. Responsible covens forbid sexual relations between
members, perhaps relaxing the rule for legitimate couples, and they
turn away people who appear to be thrill-seekers.
You must remember that a reputable coven will allow you to look
them over before making a commitment, that way they also get to
know you. Always remember that you have the right to say no and
that you should not for anything you are comfortable.
Remember at all times, that although Wiccans do not have a written
code of conduct like the Ten Commandments, there is a Moral code,
and that is to be true to yourself at all times, to treat people
as you would like to be treated and remember that you reap what
you sow, the old wives tales and other sayings are there for a reason.
